Retreat Components
The National Hematology Resident Retreat is structured around several key components designed to provide comprehensive education and networking opportunities for hematology trainees across Canada.
Educational Sessions

Dr. Oksana Motalo
OSCE Lead
Queen’s University
Dr Oksana Motalo is a malignant hematologist at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Her practice focuses on stem cell transplantation, cellular therapies, and rare hematologic malignancies. Her interests outside clinical medicine include medical education, mentorship, and advancement of women in medicine.

Dr. Helena Dhamko
OSCE Lead
University of Toronto
Dr. Helena Dhamko is an Assistant Professor and clinician teacher in the Department of Medicine, practicing outpatient general hematology and thrombosis at the Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Dhamko received her medical degree from the University of Ottawa and completed internal medicine and hematology residency at the University of Toronto. She has a Master’s of Science in Community Health (MScCH) from Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. Dr. Dhamko serves as the hematology rotation coordinator for PGY1-PGY3 internal medicine residents at UHN and also coordinates the hematology rotation for transition to residency fourth year medical students and other clerkship electives. She is the Competency-by-Design (CBD) lead for the PGY4-PGY5 Hematology residency program at University of Toronto. She also co-leads an annual, national practice OSCE for hematology residents in Canada. She is passionate about teaching at all levels of medical training in both clinical settings and formal teaching sessions.

Dr. Victoria David is clinician educator and hematologist with a focus in thrombosis medicine. She is currently appointed as Program Director at the University of Calgary. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. David is passionate about medical education. She previously completed a Master of Education in the Health Professions and holds a Clinician Educator Diploma from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Michael Scott

Dr. Michael Scott is a clinical hematologist at St. Michael's Hospital (Unity Health Toronto) and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. His clinical interests span the breadth of general non-malignant hematology, with a particular focus on immune cytopenias, disorders of iron homeostasis, and porphyria. He is highly involved in teaching and education at all levels, with a Master of Health Professions Education degree from Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

Vanessa Giuliano

Vanessa Giuliano is a PGY-4 Hematology resident at the University of Toronto. She completed her undergraduate studies and Master’s degree at the University of Toronto, followed by her medical training at Queen’s University. She subsequently completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Christopher Lemieux

Dr. Christopher Lemieux is a hematologist at CHU de Québec–Université Laval, where he serves as Director of the CAR-T cell therapy program and the Hematology Fellowship Program at Université Laval. He completed advanced fellowship training in transplantation and cellular therapy at Stanford University.

Veronica Ramirez

Veronica Ramirez is the current Canadian Hematology Society Chief Resident, and has a clinical interest in classical hematology. She completed her core internal medicine training at McGill University and is currently a PGY-4 in hematology at Université de Montréal.

David Good

Queen’s University
David Good, MD, FRCPC is the Service Chief for Hematopathology at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Dr. Good initially trained as a laboratory technologist, completing a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science followed by medical school at the University of Alberta and residency training in Hematological Pathology at the University of Toronto. He then completed a two year fellowship in lymphoma pathology at the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver. Besides hematopathology clinical service work and oversight of the hematology and hemostasis laboratories at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and surrounding community hospital laboratories, Dr. Good is involved in education of residents and medical students. He currently serves as the Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Hematological Pathology Examination Board and the Chair of the IQMH Hematology Scientific Committee.
